New York City


It was a very full week.  I visited Tien in Midtown Manhattan during his seven week work assignment.

22 July, Saturday
Staten Island ferry
Hang out with Kuan at his apt
SoHo shopping; new straw hat
Guggenheim SoHo Museum:  Australian artists and Gary Hill video
East Village walking
Stomp, the show
Jules restaurant for dinner

23 July, Sunday
Sunflower restaurant breakfast
Annex flea market; bought buttons
Guggenheim Museum:  Georg Baselitz, Picasso
Central Park bandshell, nap on grass
Thunderstorm!
Stopped in a window of Walter Steiger shoes to wait out the rain
Shopped at Bloomingdales and Gap
East Restaurant for Japanese dinner

24 July, Monday
My first day alone while Tien went to work in Paramus
Garment district, esp Paron Fabrics, designer end cuts, with bonus yardage at ends of bolts; enough for four dresses and three suits; a notions store, a trimming store
Cab to Tien's apartment to drop off packages
Kate Spade store and walked back in the rain
Maratus restaurant in Greenwich Village
Desserts from Italian bakery

25 July, Tuesday
Cab to Metropolitan Museum -- so much walking in this huge museum
"Washington Crossing the Delaware" is an enormous painting!
Madison Avenue walk -- Vera Wang, etc.
Thos. K. Woodard to look at quilts
Walked past G&J "Lipstick Building"
To Kuan's apartment; his friend Peggy ("Padge") was visiting
SoHo Kitchen dinner
Murder in the First movie rental at Kuan's

26 July, Wednesday
Tien took the day off to be with me!
Intrepid Museum but we didn't go in bc there's a storm and an outside panel of a building fell into the street
Drove to Cloisters Museum, wow:  the Treasury, the Captive Unicorn tapestry, all beautiful
Drove through East Harlem
Dakota Apartments building
Parked in Theatre District, walked past David Letterman/Ed Sullivan theater
Chez Suzette restaurant dinner
Rockefeller Center walk and ice cream at the ice rink
Garden Restaurant for dessert
I bought Statue of Liberty erasers from souvenir shop made famous by Letterman/two brothers
Miss Saigon stage show

27 July, Thursday
G&J New York to visit Carla Staley and David Torres
American Craft Museum
Museum of Modern Art -- Van Gogh's "Starry Night" is luminous in person -- unforgettable
Grand Central Station terminal
Chrysler Building lobby
Walked back to the apartment
Mani/pedi -- I don't remember this!
To Kuan's to watch "Immortal Beloved" which we had seen before
Walker's Restaurant for dinner
"Hardboiled" with Kuan, silly movie

28 July, Friday
Bus to 67th Avenue
Folk Art Museum; disappointed to find crazy quilts exhibit (not my cup of tea)
Walked down Broadway to Poli Fabrics
Paron Fabrics for wool twill stretch, cotton houndstooth
Paron Fabrics II for two pieces madras for Tien's shorts and quilt, blue satin-backed crepe
Bus home
Cab to Manny's Millinery and a notions store for shoulder pads and a gown-garment bag
Walked back on Lexington Avenue
Blue Man Group stage show, boy was that FUN
East Village walk
Prince Street somewhere for dinner

29 July, Saturday
Sunflower Restaurant for blueberry pancakes
Drive to Philadelphia (two hours on a very boring highway)
Liberty Bell
1st Bank to see portrait gallery and a copy of Declaration of Independence
Independence Hall, very crowded
Betsy Ross's house (just closed)
Christ Church where we saw Benjamin Franklin's burial place along the fence
Drove around town and saw "The Rocky Steps" to the Philadelphia Museum of Art
Tribeca Grill dinner, Robert deNiro's restaurant -- grill wasn't working, LOL!  Such good food

30 July, Sunday
Meet up with Kuan
Dim sum lunch in Chinatown
Hang out at Kuan's apartment, watching snowboard tapes, duhhh
4p leave for airport for 6:15p flight home
